About us
Golden Coyote Wetlands (GCW) oversaw a multi-use natural and cultural restoration project that aimed to accomplish reclamation of Golden (a historic community) and gold mining site in the Wolf Creek area of Josephine County. Some of our objectives included:
· Reclaim and restore riparian, wetland and wildlife habitat through the creation of ponds and wetlands.
· Preserve and restore the historic features of the mining site and community of Golden.
· Provide opportunities for hands-on education and research of natural and cultural history at Golden.
· Provide public access to both the historic and natural site while preserving a rich part of Oregon’s heritage.
· Create a sense of local ownership and foster community pride by honoring local history and through the involvement and participation of the community in site development and use.
Since it was founded in 1993, GCW transformed the mined area of Coyote Creek into a tranquil natural preserve through the contribution of thousands of volunteer hours. Stabilization projects have been completed at the historic site with the help of Boy Scouts, grants and other volunteers. The Board of Golden Coyote Wetlands achieved the designation of Golden on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and the purchase of the Golden town site in 2006 by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
Golden Coyote Wetlands dissolved the non-profit corporation in 2009.
Volunteers and interested parties are encouraged to contact Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
